Data entry is what fraudsters advertise, because it is the job that sounds like it requires nothing. That makes it the hardest category to search honestly — but genuine work does exist in it.
Why it is the scammer’s favourite
The pitch writes itself: no skills needed, work from your phone, $200 a day. It is believable to someone who needs money and has no experience, and it requires no story about what the company does.
If you see data entry advertised in a WhatsApp group, a Telegram channel, an Instagram DM or a Facebook comment, it is a scam. Not probably. The genuine ones are not advertised that way, because they do not need to be.
The variants, all of which end the same:
- Registration or “ID card” fee
- Security deposit “refunded with your first salary”
- Paid typing test
- Free work as a “trial”, then the company vanishes
- Captcha entry schemes where the withdrawal minimum is never reached
What genuine data entry looks like
It exists, and it is duller than the advertised version:
BPO companies — firms with offices and names you can look up. Some hire remote. Advertised on Indeed, not on Telegram.
Microtask platforms — Clickworker, Toloka, Appen. Real payouts. You pass a qualification test first and work is not always available.
Transcription platforms — Rev, GoTranscript, TranscribeMe. Better paid, harder entry test, and the skill actually builds.
Direct client work — a small business needs a spreadsheet cleaned or invoices digitised. Found through people you know, not through ads.

Nobody pays $200 a day for typing with no experience. If they did, the queue would be a million people long and the rate would fall the next morning.
The four-question test
Before replying to any data entry offer:
- Does the company have a website and a registered address you can verify?
- Is anyone asking me for money, for any reason? If yes, stop.
- Did this offer come from a person I do not know, on a messaging app? If yes, stop.
- Is the pay in a believable range for typing? $12-30 an hour is believable. $200 a day is not.
An honest closing thought
Data entry is being automated faster than almost any other entry-level work. OCR and language models do most of it now, and the rate has been falling for years.
If you need money this month, the microtask and transcription platforms are real and will pay you. But do not build a plan around it. Three months spent on customer support or writing will out-earn data entry within the year, and keep doing so.
